Andrew,
	I would start by booting a live USB system, and check that you 
haven't exceeded the capacity of any of the partitions.
After that, if you disable the splash screen it will help you find where the 
boot process is stopping.

{To do this edit the '/etc/default/grub' file; comment out the line 
'GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" ';.
You will then have to 'update-grub'.
A search for 'update grub from live usb' gives plenty of results such as: 
https://askubuntu.com/questions/145241/how-do-i-run-update-grub-from-a-livecd
which shows how to do this.}

With any luck you will then get useful clues from the boot sequence when you 
try to boot the system.
