[EdLUG] Bricked machine

I use KUbuntu 22.04 and just installed a long list of updates.   After
installation,  the computer displayed a message that the lock screen was
broken.   It continued that I should log in to a virtual screen (Alt F2)
and log in.  I did that  then forgot what it told me to do afterwards  and
shut the computer down by pressing the power button .


Now it stops after displaying the KUBUNTU splash screen.  Anyone have any
idea how to fix this?
