Andrew,

Grub has a boot time editor but changes are one time only.

Select the boot entry you want to boot, then press 'e' for edit.

Find the line that starts linux. It will also contain 'quiet splash'

Remove the quiet and splash and let the system boot.

There are on screen instructions.

You will still need to use some live media to check for space as your
system won't boot normally.

If you have run out of space for root, the system won't boot until there
is some free.

Space means both actual space to store files and i-nodes to point the
them. You need both.

df -h  shows space

df -hi  shows i-nodes

Roy Bamford
