Try booting with the acpi=off option. However, its a bit of a blunt
instrument.
If you boot using Grub, highlight the Grub menu option you want,
then press 'e'. follow the instructions to add acpi=off to the end of the
kernel line, then boot.
This is a one boot only change. Its not a fix, just a test.
The kernel has lots of acpi knobs like this. If you have kernel
sources, they are documented in
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/admin-guide/kernel-parameters.txt
