[EdLUG] gmail and keyboard shortcuts

I  use gmail on Chrome on my Linux box.  I'm a fan of keyboard shortcuts
as  they're quicker to use than the mouse.  Once I have the message list  I
want to do something with, to select ALL,  the shortcut is '*' 'a'. If I
use the '*' on shift 8, the command always works, but randomly if I use the
numeric keypad '*' Anyone got a clue why ?
