I don't know how tolerant linux is of any error in that file, but
I'd expect not very.  Possibly you introduced an error.

Did you put your new lines at the start, or after anything else
that was in there, or in the middle?

(Maybe linux processes lines one at a time, so the place to 
add new ones would be after the others?  But maybe not; I
do not know.)
