For the old vista laptop - depends.

If you want to keep your life easy, I'd say try Xubuntu or Lubuntu first,
or even Linux Lite or BunsenLabs

Last time I checked, Porteus is for kiosks, not for general use.

Puppy is meant to be kept on a live USB as an alternative boot - the
website specifically says the "proper" way to use it is through live
session. That being said, as you saw the other evening, having a USB with a
live session OS on it is pretty useful. Puppy might fit that need well -
always have a bootable USB for emergencies ;-)
