A long long time ago I wrote a structured text editor (which worked a bit like an XML editor following a DTD in that it allowed the user to populate variable length text fields within a predefined structure with optional parts and nested sybstructres) ... in COBOL. It wasn't - by a long way - my choice of implementation language, but it was the one my employers forced me to use. Variable length strings were held in heap-like constructs which - yes - did reside in fixed-width data files - but were sort-of paged in and out of them. That is the total amount of working storage in use for a large document was well in excess of the much smaller amount that the compiler was able to address at any one moment. -- Jeremy Nicoll - my opinions are my own. This is vitally important as part of a test, track and isolate policy, which until we get a vaccine is the only way out of a total lockdown. However it is also, as Joanna Cherry wrote, a massive invasion of privacy and must be done with privacy at its heart and be seen to be working as such by those who want to use it. We know the government has mass surveillance operations as part of its Tempora programme with GCHQ, which are passed to the NSA. The UK Government broke our trust with this programme and must be shown to respect it with a deliberate tracking app. The only way to do that is to ensure the app is open source. All source code must be published. This is how computers that run the internet are secure, and allows for collaborative development including debugging and security checks. There will certainly be no shortage of researchers thrilled to get their eyes working on checking over the app for best practice in terms of security and privacy. There also needs to be an independent scrutineer to check that those with access to the data we submit to this app have only the access necessary. The UK Government often hands this task over to the National Cyber Security Centre at GCHQ, which is the same organisation tasked with doing mass surveillance of our communications – a clear conflict of interest. It must be an independent organisation not run by spies. If the UK Government cannot take these simple steps to keep us safe from their abuses then the Scottish Government must recommend against using the NHS England app and create their own using best practice open-source methods. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... So basic questions would be, do you have PHP on the server? I see you have a php.ini file in your directory. PHP is server side, it's probably worth knowing you can do all you're trying to do with HTML5 and JavaScript, but if you're trying to learn PHP then fair enough. I would confirm your PHP install is working, it'll depend on what webserver you're using. But a phpinfo page would be a good start 'phpinfo();'. Looking at your code you're referencing your upload file as '/upload.php'. Confirm if that's correct, you can just use 'upload.php' if they're all in the same dir on the server. Links to other pages will be hyperlinks, eg you'd have index.php (you have test.html), you'd then have page2.php etc, on your home/index page you'd have a hyperlink to the other pages, usually a menu which would be on every page. So ' Link to Page 2'. I would Google for a HTML tutorials and start with a basic site without a server side language like PHP first. Get used to the structure of a webpage and have a site you can move between pages, then add what you want after. But again, you can do all this in the browser without PHP. So basic questions would be, do you have PHP on the server? I see you have a php.ini file in your directory. It looks like 123-reg is the hosting service. Their offering is a pretty traditional PHP (or perl, ruby etc) server side. As always it depends what you are trying to do. If it's just learning I suggest you go modern and use a single page client side static website using javascript. There are many static site builders for javascript. A simple one is Wintersmith. You build it using nodejs on your workstation and upload the files (js, css etc) to the host. Here's a demo I built a while ago using Wintersmith: https://sunsetdemo.netlify.app/ The source is here: git at github.com:nottledim/sunset-demo-site.git If you want something more sophisticated there's React-Static for example. It's excellent for dynamic updating of websites. I think it was Facebook invented it for their needs. The real difficulty comes when you want to do Upload. That's because there has to be something on the hosting site to manage and receive the uploaded data. With a client side website everything is in the browser and that doesn't have the ability to change anything on the host. Uploading comes with big security issues (as you would discover if you installed something like Wordpress (PHP)). The bad boys are on it within minutes! So you you need logins, sessions, captcha and all sorts. Here's a way to do uploading using client side and Google's cloud service. I've no idea if 123-reg do a similar service. https://medium.com/@mheavers/setting-up-a-basic-file-upload-feature-for-your-static-website-with-just-javascript-using-firebase-32464580d8bb It's a big learning curve.
