So, I completely failed to remember this year that digitalOcean is
organising Hacktoberfest, a month-long event to encourage people to
contribute to open source projects. If you make 4 PRs against a
project in GitHub, you qualify for a limited edition T-shirt.
Having a gathering event for enthusiasts to attend and to provide help
to those getting into free software and open source for the first time
is a plus...
So whilst we obviously won't be able to do an event in time for this year,
1) I aim to do a workshop on Git and Gitub for beginners sometime in
October - possibly the first Saturday (in a week's time) so as to help
give the little extra push. Anybody comfortable enough with git to
help out at such a session ?
2) Let's actually make a proper event of this next year, under the
EdLUG name ! I'll re-run the Git/Github workshop in September, in
advance of Hacktoberfest itself , and we can have a coding session in
a large space; maybe in conjunction with other meetups and sharing the
cost for taking up CodeBase. Anybody interested in helping do this, do
let me know.
